Still in shock over the loss of Stuart. A titan of a filmmaker, friend, mentor, and human being, and that’s just scratching the surface.
When I first moved to LA, I cold called his office on the recommendation of an acquaintance, and he took me under his wing. Read every script I ever wrote, giving me notes on draft after draft. Taught me how to direct actors. Entrusted me with running two of his absolutely incredible stage shows. Invited me to spend holidays with him and his family when I had nowhere else to go. I was just some random 20 year old nobody. He didn’t have to do any of this, but he was happy to.
He taught me more than I could have ever imagined, in both the world of filmmaking but also in life in general. He taught me not just to push boundaries, but to tear them the fuck down. Some of the best friends I’ve ever had was a result of knowing Stuart. Some of the coolest things that have ever happened to me is a result of knowing Stuart. Some of the best memories in my brain involve both Stuart, and ones that exist because of having him in my life. I’m so grateful and honored to have been able to call you a friend for the majority of my adult life, and I’d give anything to have one more afternoon of talking about movies for hours while we feast on Chinese food. RIP good sir.
