Elvis got his own horror vehicle with BUBBA HO-TEP, so we guess this was inevitable? Fango heard from writer/director Justin Kirkpatrick about his new movie BUDDY HOLLY VS. THE LIVING DEAD, scheduled to start shooting in July in Kalamazoo, MI for Ream Enterprises and CineXperia Productions. The dual-leveled storyline deals with a group of filmmakers working on a zombie movie set in 1956, when four friends head for the local rollerskating rink to see a performance by a young, up-and-coming Holly, little knowing that zombies created by government experimentation are also about to crash the party. Nate Melvin, William Elwood, Kelly Dominique, Serena Scobey, David Alexander and Joseph C. Stratton star; original EVIL DEAD FX artist Tom Sullivan is both working behind the scenes and playing an onscreen role as well.
?The parallel storylines enhance the sense of reality and thereby challenge preconceived notions of what a horror movie is,? Kirkpatick says. ?At its core, the film is about fanaticism in all its forms, from gambling to drinking to false idolization; it opens the floodgates to the subconscious, where viewers realize that the real horror element lies not within the ominous flesheating monsters. The movie itself centers on the key players involved in making the 1950s zombie flick, and the effects of living the sort of life that lends itself to such gratuitous excess. Shifting back and forth between the two plotlines will create the sensation that the ?fantasy? plot is influencing the ?real? plot?that as things gets worse within the movie, so too do they get worse in real life. The film blurs the lines between not only fantasy and reality, but between stardom and heroism, villain and protagonist and exploitation and success.?
Pretty heady stuff. Also involved in the production is David O?Malley, who co-scripted THE BOOGENS, co-wrote and directed the biker-chick flick EASY WHEELS (produced by the EVIL DEAD gang) and scripted and helmed the upcoming thriller DARK HONEYMOON, starring Lindy (DAWN OF THE DEAD) Booth and Roy Scheider.
